Mario Ferraro received his Master of Science in Aerospace and Astronautics Engineering (1st Class Honours) in 2008 from the Universita degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in Italy.
In 2010 he joined the Computational Engineering and Design research group as a PhD student.
In 2011 he was one of the designers of the Southampton University Laser Sintered Aircraft (SULSA), the world first 3D printed aircraft and in 2012 of the “iflyer”, a UAV designed by the University of Southampton in cooperation with the BBC.
From 2012 he became a full-time UAV designer for the 2SEAS 3i project, continuing part-time with his PhD project.
CED group description
The CED Group carries out multidisciplinary research using a range of analytical, computational and experimental techniques. Our strength lies in this sophisticated mix of engineering methods, coupled with industrial applications. Our primary research interests fall into three broad themed areas:
- design search and optimisation
- applied computational modelling
- computational methods
These span cost modelling, design optimisation, solid material modelling, computational fluid dynamics, computational electromagnetics, repetitive structures, contact mechanics, structural dynamics and computational methods.
