Digitalisation offers the keys of Additive manufacturing inside of the Industry 4.0 eco-system – Presented by Manuel Michiels, Materialise, at AM Integrated Factory Conference, on April 17, 2019, during 3D Printing Event in The Netherlands.
Driven by an increased demand for process control, traceability, combined with high labor costs: the digitalization of the manufacturing industry is happening on a rapid pace. A little disconnected from the ‘make’ industry, additive manufacturing has mainly been maturing in prototyping bureaus and research labs over the last 3 decades.
Today, more and more applications are found to bring this technology forward as a serial production method. Together with an annual growth rate of 25% (Wohlers) and an anticipated overall business impact of 100 Billion by 2025 (McKinsey), gives an indication that the technology is ready to be connected into the industry 4.0 eco system.
Firstly, this presentation will provide some insights on the various connections and integrations that need to happen to bring additive manufacturing forward into the digital eco-system of serial production. The increased level of interconnectivity is further accelerated by the standardization of many of the data flows.
Secondly, some exciting new workflows and opportunities will be presented that can be captured by digitalizing the AM manufacturing flow.

Short term: They will allow for end to end digital engineering and manufacturing flows with additive manufacturing.
Long term: They will allow further scaling of AM production into a distributed manufacturing network and further process control and optimisation.
What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
The industry will always balance between proprietary information and systems that will openly share information.

Manuel Michiels is a forward thinking technologist that looks into the future of Additive Manufacturing.
