Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is a very versatile AM technique, although it is widely used for prototyping due to their limited mechanical properties, especially in between layers. To approach this matter, a novel technique was developed in which the strength in between layers was increased in 184%, which results in stronger parts.

These seemingly disconnected steps have a broad influence on the additive manufacturing experience and hence its wider adoption. The presentations talk about how DSM and AMT are working on these challenges with a combined eco-system approach.

With the industrial transition to use Additive Manufacturing (AM) for Series Production, AM machine builders, SW/HW providers and end-users are confronted with different challenges to increase productivity, decrease lead time and produce parts with high quality. The current practice is however far from reaching the desired productivity and quality that are translated to large scrap rate in current production. This presentation will highlight examples for opportunities, based on industrial projects conducted by Flanders Make, to improve the AM process and machines leading to reduce lead time, increase productivity and reduce the scrap rate.

The attention of the industry involved in additive manufacturing for surface treatment seems very small. People are mainly still busy with construction rules, powder compositions and laser technology. The “surface technology” process block is left blank in many presentations. Incorrectly in the opinion of Vereniging ION. After all, if a product is made according to the additive manufacturing method, a state-of-the-art surface treatment is necessary for proper preservation, improvement of material properties or from an aesthetic point of view.

Many industrial sectors require quality assurance and certification for parts to be used. Additive manufacturing holds the promise to allow customization of the design of parts, to meet case specific demands. But certification of each individual part is a time consuming and costly operation. This is an entrance hurdle for many ‘standards controlled’ industries.

Todays end to end additive manufacturing production processes are characterized by many separated process steps requiring intensive manual labour and complex planning processes.
For series production of parts this way of working will be too costly and is prone to errors jeopardizing overall equipment efficiency. In his presentation Harry Kleijnen will elaborate on Additive Industries vision and solutions for integrated and automated additive manufacturing.

Andrea Gasperini, Brightlands Materials Center, will hold his talk at 3D Printing Materials Conference on April 16, during the 3D Printing Event at Brightlands Chemelot Campus in The Netherlands.
The presentation will provide initially an overview over the range of possible sensors (pressure, elongation, flexural) that have been embedded in composites by exploiting the freedom in fiber positioning by FDM. The response of continuous carbon fibers as a function of flexural load will be presented in a more comprehensive fashion.
