Various Additive Manufacturing systems are capable of fabricating objects that consist of multiple materials. Among these systems are multi-extruder FDM machines, which can repeatedly switch between different filaments within a single build.  In this presentation, opportunities and challenges related to multi-material FDM 3D printing are briefly addressed: What possibilities does multi-material FDM offer in terms of material combinations and heterogeneous structures? For which applications would multi-material FDM be interesting? And how can designers model multi-material objects that are to be 3D printed? About Interreg project “Accelerate3”
In Accelerate3, project partners Chemelot Research Facilities BV, Centexbel, KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk and TUA West join forces in the development of bio-based materials for Additive Manufacturing. In this way, the project wants to strengthen the specific expertise and test infrastructure with regard to 3D printing from Dutch Limburg and West Flanders. Both regions have a similar economic mix, the majority of which are small and medium-sized enterprises. In addition, they face similar challenges and are active in the field of Additive Manufacturing, with complementary specializations, from polymer formulations to processing to material characterization. Cross-border clustering allows SMEs and SMEs active in Additive Manufacturing to grow in both regions; thanks to Accelerate3, they can count on an extensive and complementary range of test and research infrastructure. Application oriented design and development of laser sintering materials – Presented by Rob Kleijnen, inspire AG at the 3D Printing Materials Conference, on April 17, 2018, at Brightlands Chemelot Campus, Geleen, The Netherlands.

Laser sintering (LS) is a widely adopted additive manufacturing technology for the production of small-to-medium sized series of end-use parts. When developing new materials for this process, the most value can be created if the design freedom that additive manufacturing offers is taken into account. It is not sufficient to merely develop a material that can be processed well on a laser sintering machine. Only when material properties are tuned specifically with certain applications already in mind, a synergy between part functionality and material properties can be achieved.

About Rob Kleijnen
After his graduation from TU Eindhoven as chemical engineer, with specialization in polymers and composites, Rob Kleijnen started as scientific assistant at inspire AG in 2014. In this capacity, he has worked with various partners from industry on the development of new materials for SLS. Under the supervision of Prof. Konrad Wegener at the ETH Zürich, Rob is also working on a PhD thesis with the same topic.
