Digitalisation offers the keys of Additive manufacturing inside of the Industry 4.0 eco-system – Presented by Manuel Michiels, Materialise

Digitalisation offers the keys of Additive manufacturing inside of the Industry 4.0 eco-system – Presented by Manuel Michiels, Materialise, at AM Integrated Factory Conference, on April 17, 2019, during 3D Printing Event in The Netherlands.

Driven by an increased demand for process control, traceability, combined with high labor costs: the digitalization of the manufacturing industry is happening on a rapid pace. A little disconnected from the ‘make’ industry, additive manufacturing has mainly been maturing in prototyping bureaus and research labs over the last 3 decades.

Today, more and more applications are found to bring this technology forward as a serial production method. Together with an annual growth rate of 25% (Wohlers) and an anticipated overall business impact of 100 Billion by 2025 (McKinsey), gives an indication that the technology is ready to be connected into the industry 4.0 eco system.

Firstly, this presentation will provide some insights on the various connections and integrations that need to happen to bring additive manufacturing forward into the digital eco-system of serial production. The increased level of interconnectivity is further accelerated by the standardization of many of the data flows.

Secondly, some exciting new workflows and opportunities will be presented that can be captured by digitalizing the AM manufacturing flow.

What drives you?

Analyzing market evolutions and identifying exciting new opportunities that will allow even more meaningful additive manufacturing applications to happen. I have a firm believe that open innovation between many industrial stakeholders is the best way forward to boost this industry.

Why should the delegate attend your presentation?

Get an overview of the standardisations and integrations that are needed to run a 3D printing production line.

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?

Short term: hybrid data formats, 3MF and MTConnect standard
Long term: Digital rights management and machine learning

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?

Short term: They will allow for end to end digital engineering and manufacturing flows with additive manufacturing.
Long term: They will allow further scaling of AM production into a distributed manufacturing network and further process control and optimisation.

What are the barriers that might stand in the way?

The industry will always balance between proprietary information and systems that will openly share information.

Additive manufacturing is born as a digital technology, make sure to get most out of it.

About Manuel Michiels

Following technological trends and market evolutions, it is my task to initiate and develop the strategic innovations that will bring additive manufacturing forward.

Manuel Michiels is a forward thinking technologist that looks into the future of Additive Manufacturing. As an innovation manager on the software department of Materialise, he works on adding novel technologies and applications to the Materialise Software portfolio based on business and market intelligence.

His business and technological insights grew out of a solid experience as application engineer offering training and consultancy for a range of industries using the 3D Printing technology. Manuel co-develop projects in which external companies, like Siemens PLM for example, rely on the 27+ years of Materialise’ leading technology to strength their entry into the domain of Additive Manufacturing.

More recently, Manuel successfully initiated and managed the adoption of finite element analysis into the Materialise Software platform.
