REF Lessons in Providing AM Solutions to Enhance Soldier Readiness

The presentation will provide a brief background about the REF, what the organization has done using AM (to include partnerships with units and industry), and its perspective on where the AM space is moving.

Colonel Joe Bookard is the Director of the U.S. Army Rapid Equipping Force. He is responsible for providing immediate materiel solutions to support the Army’s forces employed globally and informs the materiel development of the future force to meet operational demands.

Previous assignments include Brigade Commander of the 428th Field Artillery Brigade, Executive Officer to the Director of the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization.

COL Bookard graduated from SC State University, the U.S. Army War College, the School of Advanced Military Studies, and the Center for Creative Leadership, Leadership Development Program in Greensboro, NC. He has served as a field artillery officer at all levels, to include command of the 3d Battalion, 321st Field Artillery Regiment, 18th Fires Brigade (Airborne) and key staff positions in the 2d Infantry Division, 3d Infantry Division, 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII Airborne Corps.

His operational deployments include Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq; and supported Operation Unified Response Haiti.

U.S. Army Rapid Equipping Force harnesses current and emerging technologies to provide immediate solutions to the urgent challenges of U.S. Army Forces deployed globally. The REF supports priority equipping efforts over a wide range of challenges including solutions for subterranean operations, electronic warfare, unmanned and counter-unmanned aerial systems, intelligence, and expeditionary force protection. The REF leverages existing technology to meet urgent needs, while also informing materiel development for the future force.
