PDM (Product Data Management) and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) are among the top trends reported by CAD users worldwide this year, said a study conducted by the Business Advantage Group. The study also comments on the use of 3D modeling and 3D printing, which is expected to grow 50 percent this year.
About half of all CAD users surveyed were aware of PDM, and awareness has risen from 33 percent to 47 percent year-over-year. Usage is still a bit under one-quarter of people surveyed, but has risen from 19 percent to 28 percent. Large companies are more likely than small ones to use PDM, but AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) and Government use it significantly less than other sectors. Usage is expected to grow to 39 percent over the next three to five years, especially in the manufacturing sector, which also dominates current PDM usage and is expected to hit 58 percent in the next three to five years.
PLM is also increasing in importance, moving from 15 percent to 21 percent usage and from 34 percent to 46 percent awareness. Manufacturing also dominates the trends in PLM, with a predicted growth of 32 percent in the next three to five years. PLM is most used in large companies (38 percent) as compared to medium (18 percent) or small (just 8 percent.)
Unlike with PDM, the AEC sector is expected to embrace PLM, doubling its usage in the next three to five years. … (read more)
