Modified laser cutter prints 3-D objects from powder (Video)
Rice University bioengineering researchers have modified a commercial-grade CO2 laser cutter to create OpenSLS, an open-source, selective laser sintering platform that can print intricate 3-D objects from powdered plastics and biomaterials. The system costs at least 40 times less than its commercial counterparts and allows researchers to work with their own specialized powdered materials. BASF, LSS and Farsoon develop solutions for 3D-parts printed by selective laser sintering
The three companies are cooperating to develop integral solutions for materials, printers, technology and service for 3D printing that can be tailored to meet individual customer needs. Continue reading “BASF, LSS and Farsoon develop solutions for 3D-parts printed by selective laser sintering”
MIT Develops Multimaterial 3D Platform Capable of Printing 10 Materials Simultaneously (Video)
3-D printing is great, assuming you’re printing one material for one purpose, and that you’re fine with a few do-overs. But the technology is still far behind in reliably producing a variety of useful objects, with no assembly required, at a moderate cost. Safran and Dassault Systèmes have entered into strategic partnership for additive manufacturing
Also known as 3D-printing, additive manufacturing uses computer-aided design, engineering, manufacturing and materials science software to generate 3D models of parts and subsystems, which are then built using successive layers of materials.
Using Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform and Safran’s expertise in innovative technologies, the companies will develop expertise for virtual validation of an additive manufacturing process.
Dassault Systèmes R&D senior executive vice-president Dominique Florack said: “Our 3DEXPERIENCE platform’s strategy covers all aspects of the additive manufacturing process, from material design to conceptual design, generative design to manufacturing, and certification to repair.
“Together with Safran, we can nurture virtual world processes for a complete approach in this field that will help revolutionise tomorrow’s manufacturing.”
The new process will facilitate upstream material design, downstream manufacturing processes and testing to offer digital continuity for various engineering parameters. Read more..
